The laid-back Mediterranean lifestyle is commonly cited as one of the healthiest approaches in the world, and on the sun-drenched Maltese archipelago, with flight times from the UK starting at just three hours, it doesn’t is no exception.

Head to these islands to enjoy spectacular scenery and vibrant locally sourced meals, and you’ll be doing your mind, body, and soul a favor even without the workout.

For the health-conscious traveler, there are plenty of ways to center wellness in your itinerary. Whether you’re staying for a short break or a longer trip, here are some of our favorite places to visit in one of the most beautiful ports of call in the Mediterranean.

Where to stay

Le Brun Palace is a great option in the heart of Valletta, the capital of Malta. Perks include a fitness center and heated rooftop pool.

A little further there is Hotel Juliani in Spinola Bay, a tranquil beachfront boutique hotel – perfect if a daily swim is your priority.

Or, for true five-star luxury, book The Xara Palace Relais & Chateaux, a magnificent converted palace that is the only hotel inside the ancient walled city of Mdina, also known as the “Silent City”. Only local residents’ cars are allowed, which makes it a particularly zen place to disconnect from the daily noise. It’s also an A-list-approved pick: Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, Sharon Stone, and Jennifer Aniston have all stayed here.

Other excellent Mediterranean cuisines can be found in Michelin starred restaurants. Bahia, where the menu changes with the seasons, and Gozo’s Ta’ Frenewhich fuses local influence with French flair.

Comino’s Blue Lagoon, with its surprisingly clear waters, is a must-see (and swim) – for the ultimate tropical vibe, grab a virgin piña colada served in a fresh pineapple from the local stall. The lesser-known Crystal Lagoon is also well worth a visit, with several certified companies on hand to guide you through the depths.
