Video of man smoking on plane goes viral
Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia on Thursday ordered an investigation after an old video of a passenger smoking a cigarette inside a SpiceJet plane went viral on social media.
The video shows a man lying in the passenger seats, lighting a cigarette and smoking it while posing for the camera. The airline said the incident dates back to January this year, when the airline filed an FIR and banned the passenger from flying on its aircraft for 15 days under rules for “unruly passengers”. SpiceJet also said none of its crew were aware of the act.
Mr Scindia responded to a Twitter post on the matter and said: ‘Investigation. There will be no tolerance for such dangerous behavior.’
“The video was taken on January 20, 2022 as passengers were boarding flight SG 706 which was to operate from Dubai to Delhi. The said passenger and his co-passengers shot the video in the 21st row when cabin crew were busy to complete the boarding procedure. None of the passengers or crew were aware of the act. The matter came to the attention of the airline on January 24, 2022 through publications on social media,” the airline said, adding that it had investigated the matter under rules for unruly passengers and banned the offender from flying with the airline for a period of 15 days in February.
Aviation experts have pointed out that the measures taken by the airline were inadequate and not in accordance with the Aircraft Rules of 1937. According to section 25 of the rules, no one shall smoke in any part of an aircraft or ” anywhere in an aircraft during take-off, landing or refueling or during a period when a notice is temporarily posted stating that smoking is prohibited.”
