Squid Game creator Hwang Dong-hyuk is not yet sure if Season 2 of the hit Netflix drama is coming, but he has plans for the future.

Although it has the biggest Netflix launch yet, Squid game creator Hwang Dong-hyuk isn’t sure a second season is on the way.

In an interview with THR, Hwang spoke Squid gamethe unexpected success of and what the future holds. The first season of Squid game had an open finale, with main character Seong Gi-Hun choosing not to travel to the United States to see his daughter. Before boarding the plane, Gi-Hun spots the mysterious businessman who originally recruited him for the games. The recruiter has a new target, to whom he ultimately hands a card for the secret organization. Eager to save the alien from the games, Gi-Hun grabs the card and yells at him before turning to look for the recruiter, who shoots a vanishing trick.

Gi-Hun calls the number on the back of the card and is told he should get on the plane for his own good, but he chooses not to. Although his intentions are unclear, the phone call suggests that he has not overcome the trauma he suffered from the games.

Hwang confirmed, “The first season ends with Gi-hun turning around and not getting on the plane for the United States.” He added: “And that was, in fact, my way of communicating the message that you shouldn’t be dragged down by the competitive flow of the company, but that you should start thinking about who made the whole system. – and if there is any potential for you to turn around and deal with it. “

Gi-Hun’s actions are not necessarily due to revenge, Hwang noted. “It could actually be interpreted as very direct eye contact with what’s really going on as a whole,” he said. “We could follow Gi-hun’s story as he turns around and further explore how he’s going to navigate his calculations with the people who design the games.”

Other options he’d like to explore include the story of the cop and his brother, the Front Man, and the story of the recruiter that the public sees playing the game of ddakji with those on the verge of financial ruin. “I don’t know yet, but I’ll just say that there are a lot of possibilities for the storylines for season two,” Hwang concluded.

The first season of Squid game is currently streaming on Netflix. For now, a second season has not yet been announced.
