By BBN staff: Earlier this week, we learned that the San Pedro Police Department has racked up six-figure debt at a private hotel.
Today Police Commissioner Chester Williams confirmed the outstanding debt.
He revealed that since last year, agents have been staying at the hotel due to unavailability of accommodations.
However, he asked who was paying the bill, but the information was not provided.
In fact, there was no request for payment.
That was until a few days ago when the commissioner learned that a payment was requested.
According to him, the Belize Police Department will not cover all of the debt.
He hopes the Belize Tourism Board, BTIA San Pedro and the hotel owner can make arrangements to write off the debt.
According to Williams, with the increase in police patrols on the island, there has been a sharp drop in major crime which he hopes will not decline.
In the meantime, officers attached to the island have been urged to seek alternative accommodation.
