Man charged with assaulting flight attendants and breaking part of bathroom door during chaotic United Airlines flight
A man was charged with assaulting two flight attendants and breaking part of a bathroom door during a chaotic United Airlines flight from Miami to Washington, DC on Tuesday, documents show court cases filed earlier this week. Once the plane landed and he was taken into custody, Cherruy Loghan Sevilla reportedly told authorities he had taken the hallucinogenic drug psilocybin before boarding the flight.
The documents allege Sevilla became disruptive about an hour into the two-hour flight, shouting, exhibiting “disturbing/uncontrolled behavior” and assaulting at least two people. He is also accused of breaking a piece of plastic off the bathroom door and opening the locked door while another passenger was inside.
He is further accused of running down the aisle, clapping near the cockpit and getting close to passengers’ faces while looking at them and smiling. While initially convinced to take a seat, he then stood up and attacked a flight attendant, “grabbing and twisting” her chest, according to the documents.
At that time, a group of passengers, flight attendants and an onboard law enforcement official managed to subdue Seville, according to the documents – although he was accused of twisting Seville’s arm. another flight attendant during the struggle.
Once the plane landed and he was transported to the local FBI office, Sevilla reportedly told authorities he had taken psilocybin – a hallucinogenic drug produced by many species of fungi — at the Miami airport before boarding the flight.
He reportedly told authorities that this was not the first time he had taken psilocybin, adding that “he wasn’t totally surprised he acted this way after consuming it.” He told authorities he was sorry for what he had done, according to the documents.
Sevilla was charged with assault and interference with crew members and attendants. He will appear in court again next week.
