HUNTSVILLE, Alabama (WAFF) – Construction begins at Huntsville International Airport.
The inexpensive parking lot that many people use when leaving the airport will be repaved.
The other big project is the improvement of the two-lane road that everyone has to use to enter and exit the terminal.
We’re talking about Glenn Hearn Boulevard, and the project will cost $ 1.7 million.
“We expect the project to last approximately 60 days, and only one lane of inbound or outbound traffic will be affected at any one time,” said Mary Swanstrom, public relations manager.
In 60 days, it’s the first week of December, but the goal is to have the cones removed by Thanksgiving, which is one of the busiest times of the year for the airport.
âWe expect this work to be completed by the holiday travel season,â Swanstrom said.
Construction crews are also preparing to dig and repave one of the airport parking lots.
Airport employees, we spoke to say that there will still be plenty of parking space that you can use if you are boarding a plane.
âEvery once in a while, maintenance is needed on things like parking lots and paved areas like roads. So this is just routine maintenance to ensure parking is convenient, safe and good for people and vehicles passing through our airport, âsaid Swanstrom.
Two construction projects will begin soon at the airport, but the 2.5-mile-long runway that cost $ 23.5 million is nearing completion.
The crews have been working on the track since last November and will finish next month.
Much of the money used to make the improvements is made possible through grants from the FAA.
