Air travel booking site offers train alternatives
The internet is full of travel websites for booking air flights. But the operators of CheapAir.com claim they are the only airline search site that offers travelers the ability to book train travel.
Jeff Klee, general manager of the Calabasas-based website, said the idea of adding rail was initially aimed at East Coast travelers who might need to travel between Washington, DC and New York or Washington to Philadelphia. A trip on Amtrak between these destinations could cost less than a quarter of the price of a flight.
“We’ve done this primarily for the East Coast routes, where rail travel is a real viable alternative,” he said.
Travel Booking: An article in the Travel Briefcase column of the Monday Business page in Section A on June 23 reported that CheapAir.com claimed to be the only air travel website that also offered booking services for train travel. At least one other travel site, Hipmunk.com, also offers air and rail travel reservations. —
But Klee said Amtrak can also be an alternative for Southern Californians, from San Diego to Los Angeles to Santa Barbara.
How about adding express bus services or commuter rail lines to the search site?
“We’re open to anything if it’s technically feasible,” Klee said.
